Enna Vilai on Netflix: A Fisherman's Honesty on Trial
Enna Vilai, a Tamil courtroom drama now on Netflix, earns praise for Karunas and Nimisha Sajayan and doubts about its second half.

Enna Vilai, a Tamil courtroom drama, reached Netflix on Oct. 15, with Telugu, Hindi, Kannada and Malayalam versions listed, according to the Times of India. Critics who reviewed it earlier in its run praised its two leads and its conviction, and said it loses some momentum in the second half.
The film
Sajeev Pazhoor directs, making his directorial debut after years of writing Malayalam films that include Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum, according to Mathrubhumi English. Karunas plays Thavasimuthu, a Rameswaram fisherman who dives for coins that pilgrims toss into the sea during ancestral rituals. Nimisha Sajayan plays Kanchana, the lawyer who takes up his case. Alby Antony shot the film and Sam CS composed the score.
The premise, as Mathrubhumi describes it, is simple. Thavasimuthu pulls up a gold ornament instead of a coin and hands it to the police. A few officers who cannot quietly keep it make him the problem instead, and he is pushed into a theft case that has nothing to do with him.
What critics said
Mathrubhumi's Salma Sulthana gave the film 3.5 out of 5. She writes that it asks what dignity is worth and calls the courtroom stretch the strongest. She says Nimisha, dubbing in her own Tamil, builds the defence with real heat, and that when the lawyer eventually asks the court for something far beyond routine compensation, it lands as a gut-punch rather than a scripted mic drop.
Of Karunas, she writes that he is quietly the film's anchor. He has played comic and character roles for years, and she calls his restrained anguish its own small revelation. She also praises Vijayalakshmi Veeramuthu and Shashaa Sivakumar, who play his wife and sister, and a bench of veteran supporting actors that includes YG Mahendran, Nizhalgal Ravi and Poornima Bhagyaraj.
On the technical side, she says Alby Antony's camera treats Rameswaram like a character rather than a postcard, and that Sam CS steps away from his usual sonic signature to a score that leans into tension rather than sentiment.
What critics faulted
The Mathrubhumi review says the film occasionally overplays its hand. It says the thatched hut of Thavasimuthu's family feels more like a filmmaker's idea of a fishing village than a real one in 2026, that the film leans on the innocent man versus the state template in places, and that a tighter second act would have made the courtroom payoff hit harder.
Other reviews we found put the film in a slightly lower range. The summaries of reviews from OTT Release, Lifeandtrendz, Only Kollywood and Mathrubhumi give ratings from 2.75 to 3.5 out of 5. OTT Release's headline calls it a slow-burning political drama that has something to say. Only Kollywood's headline calls it a relevant drama that loses momentum along the way. The criticism most often repeated is that the courtroom-heavy second half can feel repetitive.
Where to watch
The Times of India's OTT guide gives the Netflix date as Oct. 15. The Economic Times lists the film among the week's regional streaming picks. Dishalu's guide describes it as a Tamil court drama in which Karunas is a Rameswaram fisherman caught in a false case and Nimisha Sajayan is his lawyer.
Why it matters
Nimisha Sajayan's Wikipedia entry notes a Kerala State Film Award for Best Actress and three Filmfare Awards. Here she appears in a Tamil film, speaking her own lines in Tamil, which Mathrubhumi singles out. Karunas is better known for comic roles, and the review treats this as a change of register.
What we could not confirm
We read the Mathrubhumi review in full. The other reviews we found through headlines and summaries, so we cannot attribute individual ratings to individual outlets beyond Mathrubhumi's 3.5. We could not confirm the theatrical release date, because the Mathrubhumi review is dated Sept. 17, 2026 and says nothing about the release day. We have not seen the film.
