Reporting Live Review: Parineeti Chopra's Newsroom Thriller
Parineeti Chopra plays a reporter chasing a sand-mining story in a Netflix film. Reviews credit its subject and fault its predictable path.

Reporting Live, a Hindi film that began streaming on Netflix on Oct. 9, puts Parineeti Chopra in the role of a field reporter chasing an illegal sand-mining story. The reviews we read credit the film for its subject and its sincerity, and fault it for a predictable path and thin supporting characters.
The film
The Hindu's Anuj Kumar says the film draws from real events. Dhruv Tripathi directs from a script by Milind Jadhav. Parineeti Chopra plays Sandhya Yadav, a field reporter for the Mumbai-based Hindi channel Azaad Bharati, and Deven Bhojani plays her video journalist, Vinod Sharma. The cast includes Amol Palekar as a local whistleblower, Shiva Kaka, Adil Hussain as the editor-in-chief, Shekhar Suman as the channel owner and Nasser as a construction tycoon. The runtime is 1 hour 56 minutes.
The story begins with the collapse of a bridge in a village called Visargaon, which kills school children. Officials describe it as an accident and point to local beliefs about a solar eclipse. Sandhya and Vinod follow the whistleblower's lead to a larger problem of sand mining that has hollowed out the riverbank.
What the reviews praise
Kumar says the director deserves credit for identifying the media industry's pathologies and the influence of corporate interests on the flow of information. He praises quiet observational details, such as a scene in which villagers are absorbed in a cricket match while a journalist waits for eyeballs on her story, and the film's reminder that the Right to Information Act still has bite.
Other outlets are warmer. Scroll's headline calls the film a solid thriller about crusading journalism. Siasat's headline says strong performances power a gripping drama. A summary of the reviews we found says critics find the film tightly plotted and well acted, and that Chopra's performance is generally praised.
What the reviews fault
Kumar's headline calls the film lost in the shifting sands, and his review explains why. He says the treatment feels detached, like an outsider's textbook critique of the fourth estate. He says the story stops short of examining the political nexus that lets sand syndicates thrive, and that the film critiques media bosses for burying risky stories while taking few creative risks itself.
On casting, he writes that Chopra and Bhojani deliver sincere performances, but that their age and experience do not match the script, which writes Sandhya as an entry-level reporter hungry for a breakout story. He argues that casting an established actor takes away the character's beginner vulnerability. That is one critic's view, and other reviews we found do not make it. He adds that the central investigation lacks friction, and that the veterans Palekar, Suman and Hussain are thinly written, though he says Hussain cuts through the smoke.
The Indian Express's headline says the film is buried under weak writing.
Where it sits
The reviews do not agree on a single verdict. Two outlets call it a solid thriller or gripping drama, and two say the writing lets it down. All of them credit the performances. The Hindu's closing judgement is that the film is a safe, lukewarm watch despite sharp observations and noble intentions.
Why it matters
Parineeti Chopra's Wikipedia entry lists a Filmfare Award for her debut and notes praise for her recent roles in Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar and Amar Singh Chamkila. A lead in a Netflix thriller on journalism is a different kind of role from those. Dishalu's guide lists the film among the Hindi Netflix releases of the weekend of Oct. 8 and 9.
What we could not confirm
We read The Hindu's review in full and the other three through headlines and a summary, so we cannot quote their ratings. We have not seen the film. The Hindu says the film draws from real events but does not say which, and we could not find the events named in the sources we read.
